A quick-start guide for newly onboarded Dataspace OS (DOS) customers implementing the Traceability use case

Introduction

What is Catena-X?

Catena-X is a collaborative automotive data ecosystem that enables secure, sovereign and standardized data exchange across companies. It helps suppliers participate in OEM-driven supply chains, exchange traceability data, reduce custom integrations and maintain control over shared information.

What is Dataspace OS?

Dataspace OS (DOS) is a flexible, cloud-based platform created to support companies in effectively utilizing and managing data spaces such as Catena-X and Mobility Data Space. Key components include:

The connector is used to exchange data and manages everything about the data exchange

The DTR is your centralized system for managing digital twins of physical assets in Catena-X. A Digital twin is a digital representation of your physical products, systems, or assets.

A submodel service enables participants to store, access, and exchange these submodels. A submodel is a specific aspect or function of the digital twin/physical asset. For example, the technical data of a steering wheel or part numbers of machine components.

Roles involved in Data Exchange

Data Provider

Publishes proprietary data as assets and controls access to that data

Data Consumer

Discovers assets, negotiates contracts and retrieves information

Companies often operate in both roles.

Traceability Implementation

As a data provider for traceability, the following steps are involved in the traceability use case:

  1. Preparing data: This includes determining which semantic models are relevant for your use case, and transforming your company's internal data into the target semantic model.

  2. Create Submodels and Assets.

  3. Register assets in the DTR.

  4. Configure EDC policies.

  5. Perform data exchange with data consumer.

Data Exchange with Internal Systems

Traceability data usually originates from your ERP, or other internal databases. Dataspace OS acts as the secure sharing layer between internal systems and other Catena-X partners.
