Data Space Accelerator: Use cases Explained

The Data Space Accelerator helps SMEs join the Catena X ecosystem by combining guided onboarding, predefined use cases, and financial compensation.

A key strength of the program is its use case-driven approach, ensuring that companies don’t just experiment—but implement real, productive data sharing.

Overview: How Use Cases and Funding Work Together

Participants must complete:

  1. Certificate Management (mandatory first step)

  2. One additional Catena‑X use case (optional but required for maximum funding)

Funding Model

  • €15,000 → Certificate Management (CCM)

  • €15,000 → One additional use case (Traceability, DPP, or PCF)

  • Maximum total: €30,000 per company

Compensation is:

  • Milestone-based

  • Paid after verification

  • Independent of actual costs (no invoice tracking required)

Core Use Case 1: Certificate Management (CCM)

Purpose

Certificate Management is the entry-level use case and the foundation for participation in Catena‑X.

It allows companies to:

  • Upload certificates (e.g. ISO, IATF, AEO)

  • Share them securely via the data space

  • Avoid duplicate uploads across multiple OEM portals

How It Works

  • The participant sends certificates via EDC (PUSH method)

  • Cofinity‑X validates receipt

  • A Data Readiness Certificate is issued upon success

Outcome

Company becomes “Data Space Ready”
Eligible for first €15,000 compensation

Advanced Use Case Options (Choose One)

2. Traceability Use Case

Purpose

Enables companies to share serial-level product and quality data across the supply chain.

Business Value

  • Improves quality analysis and issue resolution

  • Ensures transparency across suppliers

  • Supports compliance and recall processes

Role

Participant acts as a: Data Provider

What Companies Do

  • Map internal data → Catena‑X standard models

  • Create Digital Twins

  • Set up:

    • Data assets

    • Access & usage policies

    • Contracts

  • Publish data via EDC connector

Challenges

  • No automated validation for all 13 aspect models

  • Requires structured data preparation

Outcome

Real production data exchange
Strong foundation for future scalability

3. Digital Product Passport (DPP – Battery Pass)

Purpose

Implements the EU Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) requirements via Catena‑X.

Business Value

  • Enables regulatory compliance

  • Provides full battery lifecycle transparency

  • Prepares companies for future sustainability requirements

What Companies Do

  • Create:

    • SerialPart Digital Twin

    • BP‑PCF Digital Twin

  • Send data via Catena‑X

  • Trigger notifications via event APIs

Data Scope

  • Manufacturer data

  • Material origin

  • Technical specifications

  • Carbon footprint data

Special Requirements

  • Site registration (BPNS)

  • Compliance with Catena‑X data standards

  • Messaging via event systems (service bus)

4. Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

Purpose

Enables standardized carbon footprint data exchange between partners.

Business Value

  • Increasingly required by OEMs and regulators

What Companies Do

  • Choose a PCF solution provider

  • Set up an exchange endpoint

  • Share PCF data using Catena‑X standards

Technical Process

  • Create:

    • Data asset

    • Access policies

    • Contract definitions

  • Respond to PCF requests via API
